Volunteer FAQs

What is the commitment?
Volunteers are required to make a one-year commitment. This includes coming in once a week, for 3-4 hours and getting a replacement for your shift if you are unable to come in. Volunteers are asked to commit to the same shift every week as this provides consistency for patients, family members and staff.

What is the minimum age to volunteer?
The minimum age to volunteer is 15.  However, some departments have higher age restrictions.

What qualities do your volunteers have?
We are looking for volunteers who are outgoing, energetic, compassionate, customer-orientated and dependable. We want volunteers who are motivated to make a positive contribution to the well-being of our patients.

Can I do my 40 hours at GGH?
Due to the nature of our programs and the screening involved, we are not able to provide placements that are less than one year.  By committing to 1 year, you will be able to obtain your 40 hours.

I am only in Guelph from September – April for school. Can I still volunteer?
Yes.  However, your volunteer application package must be submitted by July 15.

Am I able to work in any area I want?
We place the most suitable volunteer in each position. Our placement decision is based on the availability of the volunteer, our scheduling needs, and the skills required for each position. 

Do I have to buy a uniform?
Yes.  Retail volunteers have the choice between a T-shirt ($12) and a golf shirt ($25). Patient care and administrative volunteers have a choice between a scrub shirt ($15) and a smock ($20). Pediatric volunteers wear a t-shirt, which is $15.

Who do I report to?
The person you report to will be identified on your position description. You can contact the staff in Volunteer Services as well.

Can I observe Medical procedures or help with medical treatments as a volunteer?
No. Volunteers are here to provide non-medical support for patients and their families. As a result, there will be very limited contact with physicians or opportunities to observe medical procedures.

I am a professional by training (ie: nurse, physician, dental hygienist, counselor). May I practice that as a volunteer?
Volunteers are not permitted to act as professional health care providers when they are here in a volunteer capacity. Volunteers must only do the duties that are outlined in the position description, regardless of any professional background they may have.

Can I take holidays??
Definitely.  It is your responsibility to get someone to cover your shift while you are away. Any volunteer who does not show up for three consecutive shifts, without letting us know will be removed from their position and replaced with another volunteer.

What If I forget to get someone to cover my shift?
If you miss three shifts in a row without getting coverage, you will be replaced.

What if I get sick at the last minute?
If you are ill or there is an emergency, please contact the department you volunteer in to let them know. It is the responsibility of each volunteer to get coverage for any shifts they are going to miss.

Do I have to come in on Statutory Holidays?
No. Volunteers are not required to come in on statutory holidays.  However, some volunteers choose to do so.

What if I want to change jobs or take on another position?
Contact the Volunteer Services Department to see what positions are currently available.
