Volunteer Opportunities

The minimum age to volunteer in the Courtyard Boutique and the Patient Visiting Program is 15. You must be 18 years old to volunteer in any other volunteer position.

Please plan ahead and apply several months before you wish to begin volunteering.

Year Round Volunteering

Able to start anytime: Applications are accepted anytime and interviews and training are ongoing.

School Year Volunteering

Sept-April or Sept-June: Students who would like to volunteer for the school year are asked to submit an application package between January - April 15.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to attend an in-person interview before May 30. All steps of the application process must be completed by August 31. Training will begin the second week of September.

Spring Or Summer Volunteering

May-August: University/College students who would like to volunteer for the spring semester are asked to submit an application between October - January 15.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to attend an in-person interview before February 1. All steps of the application process must be completed by April 30. Training will begin the first week of May.

July – August: High school students who would like to volunteer for the summer are asked to submit an application between January - March 15.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to attend an in-person interview before April 15. All steps of the application process must be completed by June 30. Training will begin the first week of July.

admin volunteerAdministrative Volunteer Opportunities
Our administrative volunteer opportunities provide support for non-union staff. Examples of work may include special projects, mailings, display boards etc. Computer skills are beneficial for these roles. Administrative Support shifts are typically Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – noon or 1 – 4 p.m.

Patient Care Volunteer Opportunities
All of our patient care volunteer opportunities have been developed to support the Mission of the hospital which is to “to provide the highest quality care and experience for patients and their families”.

Greeting And Providing Information

CT Scan Volunteer
Greet everyone entering the CT scan. Provide directions to change rooms. Provide forms for patients to read.
Shifts are Monday–Friday 9 a.m. – noon; noon – 2 p.m. and 2 –4 p.m.

Diagnostic Imaging Volunteer
Greet everyone entering the Diagnostic Imaging registration area. Escort patients to the specific waiting rooms.
Shifts are Monday–Friday 8 a.m. – 11 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; and 2:30 –
4:30 p.m.

Main Lobby Greeter Volunteer
Greet everyone entering the hospital and provide directions, wheelchairs and parking information as requested. Assist with flow of patients registering in Ambulatory Care. Accompany patients and visitors to locations within the hospital as necessary.
Shifts are Monday–Friday 8 a.m. – noon and noon – 4 p.m.

Preoperative Registration Volunteer:
Greet everyone arriving in Pre-Operative Registration. Provide necessary forms, information and directions as required.
Shifts are Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. – noon and noon – 3 p.m.

Patient-Centred Visiting

Day Surgery Volunteer
Provide non-medical support to patients and visitors before and after the surgical process. Escort patients to vehicle after discharge. This role requires volunteers to be able to push a wheelchair and be outside.
Shifts are Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. – noon and noon – 3 p.m.

Emergency Department Volunteer
Greet everyone arriving in the Emergency Department and provide general information and directions. Volunteers escort visitors to see patients in the Emergency Department as appropriate. Provide non-medical support to patients at the request of staff.
Shifts are Monday–Sunday from 7 –10 a.m.; 10 a.m.–1 p.m.; 1– 4 p.m.; 4 – 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 –11 p.m.

HELP volunteer trimmed

Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP)
Volunteers create a friendly environment for patients enrolled in the HELP program by providing support, encouragement and companionship. HELP volunteers provide specific assistance in five volunteer interventions. This is a highly structured program using the services of selected volunteers who are trained and supported by the Elder Life Specialist. For more information about the HELP program, click here.
Shifts are Monday–Sunday 10 a.m.–1 p.m., 1 – 4 p.m., and 4 – 7 p.m.

Patient Visiting Program
Provide a social visit for patients; assist with opening items at mealtimes as requested by staff.
Shifts are Monday–Friday from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sun from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Retail/Fundraising Volunteer Opportunities

Proceeds from the gift shop and lottery ticket sales are donated to the Foundation for the purchase of patient equipment.

Courtyard Boutique
Greet everyone arriving in the Gift Shop. Sell and replenish supplies. Keep shop clean and free of clutter. Provide general information and directions to patients and visitors. Shifts are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; 1-4 p.m.; and 4 – 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 2 – 5 p.m.

Hospital Equipment Lottery Program For People (H.E.L.P.P.)
Sell break open lottery tickets to support the purchase of patient care equipment; provide general information and directions to patients and visitors. Must be able to push a cart and lift boxes of tickets. Shifts are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – noon; noon – 2 p.m. and 2 – 4 p.m.
