How exciting it is that your baby’s condition has improved and he/she no longer needs Level III Intensive Care!
We are located on Level 6. The main doors to our unit are locked at all times for security reasons. To enter, you have to ring the intercom system to connect with a Registered Nurse. For a deposit of $20 you can get a security card from switchboard. This card is for parent’s use only and gives access to the unit 24 hours per day for your baby’s entire stay (the deposit is refundable upon discharge). Weekly parking rates available. Just ask at switchboard.
A Paediatrician and experienced Special Care Nursery Registered Nurses will be assigned to the care of your baby. When your baby arrives he or she will be placed in an isolette/incubator. There may be some additional monitoring as we get to know your baby.
Transferring from one hospital to another may be stressful and babies need time to adjust to their surroundings. They will be in contact isolation for 5 days.
Parents of the baby can be in the nursery anytime. To promote our goal of family centred care, siblings (if vaccinations up to date) and grandparents, are permitted in the nursery during visiting hours (2 - 8 p.m.) We ask that one parent be present if baby is to have visitors. Only two visitors at a time. The physical layout of our nursery is open-concept and parents may be asked to leave during certain procedures, emergencies, and during shift changes to protect confidentiality.
To encourage mother/baby bonding we can provide a bed when available in our Care-by-Parent room for the mother to stay in. We have facilities on our unit for breast pumping and for breast milk storage.
Hand washing is our first line of defense against infection. We encourage hand washing before and after handling the baby. If either parent has a cough or cold, masks will be provided upon request. This is to protect your baby and all the other babies in the nursery.
