Donations have impact across Guelph General Hospital

May 4 - What effect does financial support from members of the community have on its hospital? A wide-ranging one according to Guelph General Hospital’s President and CEO, Richard Ernst.

“Donors have an impact every day throughout our Hospital. Each day a surgeon uses equipment purchased with donations to help save a life; a seriously ill patient’s vital signs are monitored with equipment made possible through donations; a tiny newborn is comforted and warmed in a bassinette donated by our caring donors.”

This past year, The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital – through money raised from 4,800 donations from community members - was able to provide GGH with close to $2 million for equipment, renovations and special projects that would otherwise not have been possible.

“The generosity of our community is incredible,” says the Foundation’s Chair, Paul Hanna. “To me, it’s somewhat humbling to know that even during these tough economic times, people dug deep to provide their support for their hospital.”

In the year, the community donations totaled $2.3 million. There were many different types of gifts – those made in response to mailings, in memoriam and in honour gifts, e-gifts, from special events, pledge payments, bequests, grateful patient gifts and many more. The gifts ranged from $5 to $250,000.

“Donor support funds big items, small items and everything in between,” explains Suzanne Bone, the Foundation’s Executive Director. “From paying off our $3.1 million MRI scanner to the purchase of cartoon bandaids to bring a smile to a child’s face, each purchase makes a difference to healthcare in our community.”

The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital is a long-established, well-managed fundraising organization with strong donor relationships and a commitment to make sure gifts are used to help the Hospital as intended. Over the years, more than $33 million has been raised.

The full list of items funded includes:

  • Final installment to pay for MRI scanner and renovations ($320,000 this year, $3.1 million total) – more than 25,000 scans complete so far
